Top Tips for Self-Tanning

Top tips for self tanning

The sun’s finally out which means weekends spent by the pool or beach (if you’re lucky!) However, if you’re like me and prefer to avoid getting full sun exposure the best way to get a golden tan is to fake it.

I have to admit that this has always been a tricky endeavor… I have looked patchy, orange and weird more than once, but the new generation of self-tanners have come a long way from where they were in the past.

Deciding when to self-tan must also be factored in because it is a multi-step process and you need to ensure enough drying time (see tip #7).

So let’s dive into the top tips to self tanning.

 Tip #1- Trust the pro’s.

If you’re tanning for an event or a beach vacation that calls for skimpy clothing, I highly recommend letting a professional do it. They are the pro’s, and you are paying for their expertise plus they have that awesome even sprayer and know where to go darker and lighter for a very natural look.

Tip #2- Exfoliate 24 hours before.

Whether you opt for a professional, or the at home route, it’s important to exfoliate 24 hours prior to tanning. This will create the perfect base for your tan by removing dead skin. When exfoliating, pay extra attention to very dry areas like your feet, ankles, elbows and knees. Dry brushing or an in-shower body scrub will do the trick.

Tip #3- Remove hair 24 hours before

This is one of the most important yet overlooked fake tan tips: if you choose to remove your body hair, make sure that this is done 24 hours before you tan. Self-tanners are likely to sink into those loosened pores, creating dark spots and an uneven finish.

Tip #4- Avoid deodorants and perfume

Deodorant and perfume can create a sticky layer on the skin’s surface and prevent the tan from adhering. It’s best to avoid them all together before tanning and while it develops.

Tip #5- Moisturize just before tanning

Fake tan can often cling to very dry areas, so make sure that your skin is well-hydrated. Use a moisturizer every day in the week leading up to tan application, then moisturize very dry areas, such as elbows, knees, ankles, feet and hands, 2 to 3 hours before tanning.

Tip #6- Always use a tanning mitt

For a flawless, streak-free tan and stain-free hands, always apply fake tan with an applicator mitt. It will help to evenly distribute and blend your tan, ensuring a more even and natural finish every time.

Tip #7- Allow your tan to dry before dressing

I recommend allowing your tan to dry fully before dressing. I use a hair dryer over my body to help it dry faster and get any wet patches. When you do get dressed, opt for something loose and dark. You don’t want it rubbing against your skin or showing any marks.

Tip #8 . Wash off your tan in cool water

If you opt for a wash-off tan, allow it to develop for 4 to 8 hours. Then, wash it off with slightly cooler water than normal, and don’t use scrubs or soaps as these can fade your tan. Simply rinse until the water runs clear.

 Tip #9. Maintain Your Tan

Now that you have a beautiful, bronzed glow, the trick is keeping it even and long-lasting. Gently exfoliating every 2 or 3 days and moisturizing often. This will help your tan last up to 10 days.
