Four Cheap Ways to Combat Wrinkles (and One Freebie!)

Four Cheap Ways to Combat Wrinkles

There has never been a better time to grow old without actually looking old. Creams, lasers, Botox, fillers, and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures make it easier than ever to slow the appearance of aging. But what if you have caviar anti-aging dreams on a chicken nugget budget? Are you doomed to a life of bags and wrinkles by your frugal finances?

Absolutely not.

Whether you are pinching pennies in order to afford that high-end cream or there simply aren’t that many pennies to pinch, here are several inexpensive yet effective ways to help keep wrinkles at bay.

Sleep on your back (really).

Night after night, stomach and side sleepers cause creases in their faces that, over time, develop into wrinkles and may even cause asymmetry. But unless you were blessed to be a natural back sleeper (because really, what is better than crashing face down in a pillow or curling up in the fetal position), this takes a bit of effort. Start by committing to laying on your back and staying that way for at least an hour and gradually build up to the entire night. Not only will this prevent future wrinkles, but in just a week or two of consistent back sleeping, you will notice a reduction in under-eye bags and wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and creases in your decolletage. To make this transition easier, try a sleep trainer pillow like the AM AEROMAX Beauty Pillow for Anti-Wrinkle & Anti Aging.

Cost: At $49.97, this is the most expensive item on the list, but its longevity factor and low cost compared to repairing sleep wrinkles make it a no-brainer.

Wrinkle Patches

Wrinkle patches have seen an explosion in popularity recently. They cover the gamut from forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, under-eye bags, smile and lip lines, chest creases, and wherever else wrinkles form.

Paper and silicone patches work by restricting the movements that cause wrinkles and smooth the appearance of existing wrinkles. Gel patches are infused with skin-care ingredients for targeted delivery where you need them most. Try pairing them for a one-two punch by sleeping with the SIO Beauty Patches (bonus points if you do this on your back) and following up in the morning with the MIZON Snail Repair Intensive Gold Eye Gel Patches.

Cost: Varies depending on the type and location of the patch. Reusable silicone patches will cost more than single-use paper patches.

Sun Hats

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know sunscreen is a must (Unless you literally live under a rock. Probably pretty safe down there). But what you may not know is that sunscreen only provides protection; it doesn’t eliminate sun exposure. To do that, you need a physical barrier. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat for outdoor activity and driving will significantly reduce sun exposure. Try a wide-brimmed sun visor hat from SAN DIEGO HAT COMPANY. This fabulous hat has an extra wide brim, is gentle on your hair, and if I had a nickel for every time someone stopped me and asked where I got it, well, I’d have enough nickels to buy many more hats.

 Occlusives

Occlusives are ingredients that prevent moisture loss and keep out irritants and pollutants. Think petroleum jelly. This old-school occlusive is great for keeping lips soft and hydrated and softening those crow’s feet. But if you want to jump into the new-school, try a face oil like Palmers Skin Therapy Face Oil. With vitamins C and E, Cocoa Butter, and retinol, it hydrates AND creates a protective barrier to keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out! Slather on to quench dry skin or dab on around the eyes and upper lip if you have oily or acne prone skin.

 Embrace your Resting Bitch Face!

Repetitive motions like squinting, pursing your lips, chewing gum, rubbing your eyes, and looking down at your phone all cause wrinkles. Think about all the little things you are doing with and to your face every day. Smoking? Stop it! Seriously, stop it. Besides the fact that it reduces oxygen flow and nutrients to your skin, you are causing upper lip wrinkles with each puff. And it can literally kill you. The goal is resting bitch face, not resting dead face.

On a lighter note, if you need corrective glasses, stop squinting and get them. Going in the sun? Don those shades. Quit using straws. Reduce gum chewing. Hold your phone up. Stop rubbing your eyes. Think about the faces you make. Do you furrow your brow when you’re angry? Chew the inside of your cheek when you’re thinking? Raise your eyebrows when you look at your reflection? Try to minimize these habits. Bottom line: The only facial expression worth a wrinkle is a smile.

Cost: Absolutely free!
